2007:
First the electrical update. Then a new heatpump.
The landscaper wants to rip out the steps and pour a new sidewalk. I fire him and trim back the rhododendron.
The decorator feels that I "respect the house" and wants me to choose colors after I choose rugs and furniture. Ok, fine.

And the tile falls off the bathtub surround.
So many choices of tile that I obviously I go with plain white.

Then rip out 2" of the kitchen back wall have the new floor put in.

And order the appliances which sit in the dining room for months.

In fact, the washing maching, which turns out to be a second dryer, is almost off warranty by the time M.Sage comes over to help me move it into place and we discover the mistake.
It is only a little hilarious that Albert Lee Appliance wants to send someone out to teach me the difference between a washer and a dryer.

While JS is studying abroad I get help emptying the whole house, get insulation blown in the exterior walls, patch and paint all by myself; and have the wood floors refinished before getting help moving everything back in from the old garage.

But wait -- Mom and I must make lifelong anticipated trip abroad together before the kitchen is done.
When we return from visiting JS in Thailand (during study abroad) the kitchen cabinets are not ready to install. In fact Don Willis furniture has taken over the management of construction of the cabinets even though I hired a woodworker who could understand why I wanted the same kind as were made in 1933.
And the installers had maybe never put in cabinets before. At least they didn't know how to use the cabinet jacks. So the cabinets are not made to specifications and the reason they gave me? "We spoke about it so long ago!" The doors wobble. The corner door rams the drawers next to it. The bread boards only work part of the year. And the glass was installed with mirror clips, but don't get me started. Please. I hate them. Time heals lots of wounds, but not in my kitchen.

See MCH. My Cute House.

October 2004. Move in with JS. JS goes to UW. I take UW extension course.
May 2005. I am accepted to grad school in Boston. Must pack and go. JS stays to housesit.
Many visits. Back and forth.
December 2006. Move back from Boston. Whew.
Let the work begin.
